Analysis of Factors Influencing Family Financial Readiness in Facing the Burden of Elderly Care Costs in Indonesia

Abstract
This study aims to analyze the determinants of family financial preparedness in facing the burden of elderly care, a crucial issue amidst the phenomena of an aging population and the "sandwich generation" in Indonesia. Using a behavioral finance theoretical framework, this research examines the influence of financial literacy, income level, social support, and perception of care costs on financial preparedness. Data were collected through a survey of 150 heads of households with elderly dependents and analyzed using the variance-based Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The model evaluation results demonstrate a very strong predictive explanatory power with an R-Square value of 81.5%. The findings reveal that the perception of care costs is the only factor with a positive and highly significant influence on financial preparedness (ß = 0.898; p < 0.001). Surprisingly, financial literacy, income level, and social support proved to have no significant partial influence. This indicates a shift in economic behavior, where a family's financial readiness is driven more by psychological-anticipatory factors regarding future cost risks rather than pure economic capacity or technical financial knowledge. These findings contribute theoretically to the family risk management model and provide policy implications for the government to reformulate financial education strategies that emphasize the transparency of Long-Term Care (LTC) cost estimations.
